Several utility providers in California have warned that natural gas bills will be much higher than usual. Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) projects residential energy bills to be 32% higher from November to March, compared to the same period last year, according to a statement shared by the company.

Faced with high natural gas bills, the California Public Utilities Commission is considering doling out aid for Californians through so-called Climate Credits, which are part of efforts to fight climate change climate.

The credit comes from a state government program that requires power plants, natural gas providers and industries that emit greenhouse gases to purchase carbon allowances through the Air Resources Board. The credit on your electric and natural gas bills is part of the payments from this state program.

Generally, these credits are sent twice a year, in April and October. However, the California Public Utilities Commission is considering distributing them before April, said its president, Alice Reynolds, according to Fox5.

Natural gas credits, typically applied in April, appear automatically on Californians’ utility bills. Regarding the amounts of the credits, these vary depending on the utility provider.

It is worth noting that Californians do not need to do anything to receive the credit. This will automatically appear on your bill, as long as it is from the aforementioned providers.

The California Weather Credit is distributed equally to each provider’s residential customers, regardless of energy usage or bill amount. In other words, each provider’s customers receive a different amount to those of other providers, however, residential customers of a single provider receive the same amount.

Here are the amounts of the credit according to the natural gas supplier:

  • PG&E: $52.78
  • SDG&E: $43.40
  • Southwest Gas: $56.35
  • SoCalGas: $50.77
