Neither Coca Cola nor coffee: these are the products that have become cheaper at Walmart
While most supermarket items have become more expensive during the past year, a few goods have dropped in price at Walmart.

The weekly shop got more expensive with another round of price rises in January. For the third year running, shoppers are faced with bigger bills at checkout - according to US Department of Agriculture figures, food prices rose by 9.9 percent in 2022 - the biggest rise since May 1979.
Since then, we’ve seen subsequent rises of 2.7 percent in 2023 and 2.4 percent last year in the “Food at home” index.
So has anything in your supermarket cart become cheaper than it was 12 months ago?
Inflation has cooled during the past two years so we have less less drastic price hikes and believe it nor not, some items in your shopping basket are now slightly cheaper.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at how prices have changed at Walmart and where savings can be made.

The best value items in Walmart in January 2025
The biggest drop in price was with bananas, which worked at $0.50 each - a 35.1% drop from the same time last year. The second item on the list is also a healthy option - Quaker Old Fashioned Oats, with an 18 oz. tub now 26.1% less expensive.
Fish has never been cheap and salmon, whether frozen or fresh, has been a luxury item for many shoppers. It’s retail price has declined by almost a quarter. A 2 lb. pack of skin-on fillets are now priced at $5.24 - $1.75 cheaper than last year.
Seedless red grapes have dropped in price by just over 20% while a three-bulb pack of fresh garlic imported from Peru has a similar reduction.

Walmart’s plan to offer cheaper groceries
Walmart’s CEO, Doug McMillon has promised to lower prices on 6,000 items, half of which are groceries. “Our efforts to bring down pricing have helped as total like-for-like inflation has remained close to flat for the past four quarters with Q3 general merchandise and consumables deflationary and food inflationary in the low single digits,” he explains.
“Providing everyday low prices for our customers and members remains a priority, and we continue to lower prices in the U.S. across our assortment of national brands and private brands. During the quarter, we had price rollbacks on approximately 6,000 items across our assortment, including around 3,000 items in grocery, and have converted nearly 2,000 price rollbacks over the past year to long-term price reductions”.
While Walmart continue to offer some excellent deals, some savings are only marginal - for instance, the saving you make on a 6-pack of Thomas’ Bagels is just four cents.
And looking at the long-term stats, prices hardly ever drop significantly in the long run. But every cent counts and anything that cuts the weekly shopping bill can only be a good thing.
