Neither energy nor raw metals, these are the products most imported by the USA: Surprisingly high dependencies in California and Texas

What are the top imports in USA?

Update:

The topic of imports has been a contentious one in recent months, stemming from President Donald Trump’s far-reaching tariffs.

The White House is attempting to boost domestic manufacturing by bumping up costs for foreign-made products. But US consumers are now accustomed to having access to cheaper or better quality products from overseas, meaning that the tariffs could hurt consumers.

To illustrate the extent of US reliance on imports, economics publication Visual Capitalist has outlined which products are most imported in different states. The study looks at which category of products were most imported in 2024, with goods divided into eight groups: Computer & Electronics; Cars & Auto Parts; Chemicals & Medicines; Energy; Industrial Machinery; Processed Food & Beverages; Raw Metals and Other.

Across the 50 states Cars & Auto Equipment was the most popular, rankings as the No. 1 import across 14 states. Close behind is Computers & Electronics, which takes top spot in nine states.

The two states with the highest gross domestic product (GDP) are California and Texas, and they also rank first in the Visual Capitalist study. In both those states the top import is Computers & Electronics and the figures are truly incredible.

In 2024, the total value of Computers & Electronics imports in California was $152.6 billion. That figure was $96.5 billion in Texas.

As it stands, Trump has added a 10% minimum tariffs on all imports and a range of sector-specific tariffs that go as high as 25%. Another round of tariffs, some set at 50%, are also on pause while the White House tries to conduct negotiations with nations on trade deals. If these tariffs continue to be enforced, consumers in the US will start to notice soaring import costs very, very soon.
