Update:

Saudia Arabia’s energy giant Saudi Aramco is, by some distance, the world’s most valuable oil and gas company.

Chiefly owned by the Saudi state, the Dharan-based firm currently boasts a market capitalization of just over $1.6 trillion.

What is market capitalization?

Market capitalization - often abbreviated to “market cap” - is “the current value of a publicly traded company, based on the total dollar amount that all of its outstanding shares are worth”, explains the Investopedia financial expert Jason Fernando.

Fernando’s colleague, James Chen, adds that “outstanding shares” refers to the total stock held by a company’s shareholders.

Aramco outstrips global energy rivals

A company that went public in 2019, Aramco has a current market capitalization more than three times as large as its nearest challenger, the American firm Exxon Mobil.

According to data compiled by Companies Market Cap, indeed, Aramco’s present market cap is greater than that of the next seven biggest oil and gas companies combined.

Founded in 1933, Aramco is the globe’s most prolific oil producer, contributing a reported 12.4 million barrels per day in 2024.

World’s top oil and gas companies by market cap (as of July 12, 2025):

  • 1. Saudi Aramco (Saudi Arabia): $1.617tn
