Neither Germany nor the United Kingdom: this is the country that drinks the most beer in the world
Global consumption reached 194 billion liters in 2024, with one nation accounting for a fifth of the world’s beer demand.

Beer remains one of the world’s most widely consumed alcoholic beverages. In 2024, global consumption reached 194 billion liters. While per‑capita data often grabs the spotlight, total volume offers a different lens - one shaped by demographic shifts, economic development, and evolving consumer habits.
According to figures from Kirin Holdings, consumption has fallen across many developed markets. Meanwhile, emerging countries such as India, Mexico, and Russia show uneven trends, with declines in some instances but also significant growth potential. China and the United States together account for a major share of global beer consumption.
China continues to hold its position as the world’s largest beer market, with 40.5 billion liters consumed - roughly 21% of global demand - despite a 3.7% drop from the previous year. The U.S. ranks second with 22.3 billion liters, though its consumption also slipped slightly.
| Rank | Country | Volume (billion liters) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | China | 40.5 |
| 2 | United States | 22.3 |
| 3 | Brazil | 15.3 |
| 4 | Mexico | 10.8 |
| 5 | Russia | 9.5 |
| 6 | Germany | 7.2 |
| 7 | South Africa | 4.6 |
| 8 | Vietnam | 4.6 |
| 9 | United Kingdom | 4.5 |
| 10 | Spain | 4.4 |
Rising consumption
India leads all major beer‑drinking nations in growth. In 2024, its consumption jumped 14.6%, driven by rising incomes and the drink’s popularity among younger adults. Mexico and Russia also posted notable gains, tied to an expanding middle class and greater spending power.
Europe presents a more mixed picture. The region still plays a significant role in both production and consumption, but trends vary by country. Germany and Spain saw declines in alcohol consumption, while the United Kingdom posted a slight increase. Drinking habits across the continent are clearly shifting.
