Netflix to raise prices: when will happen and how much will a subscription cost?

After the actors’ strike, the platform will adjust its rates, which already increased recently

Suscripciones

Netflix plans to raise prices again after the end of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, according to anonymous sources consulted by The Wall Street Journal. This news comes after Amazon announced that Prime Video would begin integrating ads next year.

The new reporting indicates that the streaming content giant is considering the possibility of increasing prices “in several brands globally,” although it is likely that the first will be the United States and Canada.

At the moment, there is no information about the new rates, and Netflix has not commented on the matter. Price increases could be coming to provide the streaming service with more revenue to pay residuals without seeing their profit margins fall.

How much does Netflix cost in the United States?

Netflix has three subscription options, which differ because they have some different characteristics:

  • Standard with ads: costs $6.99/month, allows subscribers to stream in 1080p quality, but does not allow content downloads. In addition, the catalog is more limited and only one user can access the account.
  • Standard: costs $15.49/month and has no ads. The maximum resolution is 1080p, but content can be downloaded, and two devices can access the account.
  • Premium: costs $19.99/month, allows for streaming in 4K resolution, downloads, and can be shared between four devices simultaneously.

Goodbye to shared accounts

Since its inception as a streaming platform, Netflix has not only turned a blind eye to people sharing their passwords but has published tweets encouraging the practice.

However, the company has had a change of heart, now making it much more difficult for users to share their accounts; currently, accounts can only be shared with users in the same household. This move is also a way for the company to increase their revenue as more users who want to use the platform will need to purchase their own plan.
