The return of President Donald Trump to the White House has brought about swift change with a new focus on some of his campaign priorities.

Trump repeatedly promised to enact mass deportation of immigrants without legal justification for being in the United States and his plans are now in action. In the last week alone, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has deported more than 7,000 undocumented migrants in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.

According to a report in NBC News, the Trump administration is looking to redouble its efforts to arrest as many illegal immigrants as possible in the coming weeks. They plan to make wide-scale raids in three different cities each week, with the aim of deporting between 1,200 and 1,500 people per day.

Why was an ICE raid cancelled?

The first raid of the week took place in Chicago, Illinois, on Sunday, January 26, The second hit New York City on Tuesday and was attended by the Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem.

A third operation was scheduled for Thursday in the city of Aurora, about 40 minutes from Denver, Colorado, but officials were forced to cancel due to security issues. Details of the Aurora operation was leaked and spread online, sparking concern that the officers involved in the raids could be at danger.

That decision highlights the emotive nature of the debate on immigration in the United States. Trump promised a rapid response and is eager to show progress on a key campaign pledges.

On Monday ICE made 1,179 arrests of immigrants but only 52% of those had any criminal history, either in the US or in other countries. A study from Bloomberg found that undocumented immigrants pay around $100 billion per year in taxes, a significant boost for government revenue. As more undocumented workers are deported that figure will only fall.
