Not a dog or a cat: These low-maintenance pets are “solitary creatures and don’t often want companionship or handling”
Do snakes make good pets? They’re certainly more low-maintenance than a needy dog.

If you’re not a fan of fur all over the house - or constantly worrying about a pet’s well-being - then a scaly companion might be just what you’re looking for.
Believe it or not, snakes can make fantastic pets. Don’t slither off to play Wordle just yet, I’m being serious.
Now, I’m not suggesting you try to convince your significant other to welcome a pit viper into the family. But there are plenty of calm, low-maintenance snake species that make excellent housemates. Ball pythons, corn snakes, and desert rosy boas are among the best choices for beginners.
One important thing to remember when choosing a pet snake is their enclosure. They won’t be sleeping on the couch or at the bottom of your bed, so it’s crucial to create a habitat that meets their needs before bringing one home. A reliable heat source, adequate humidity, and a few good hiding spots are essential. If properly cared for, snakes can live up to 35 years in captivity.
They weren’t made to be cuddled or carried around all day - most prefer to be left alone. They’re independent by nature and don’t need daily touchy-feely sessions with you.
Dr. Anthony Pilny, medical director and associate veterinarian at Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital, told azcentral: “Most common pet snakes are safe if socialised and raised properly. I never recommend anyone own venomous species, despite the appeal for some. The bond with a snake is different from that of other pets, so make sure it’s truly the right fit for you.”
He added, “The relationship with a snake is unique and often one-sided. Snakes are solitary creatures. I suspect they recognise individuals over time, especially those who feed or handle them regularly, but it’s impossible to know for sure.”

Lastly, snakes generally don’t get along with other animals. So if your home already feels like a furry house party, think again. And definitely don’t place the snake enclosure next to the rabbit hutch - that’s a disaster waiting to happen for poor Floppy.
