Update:

Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp, has predicted that the ubiquity of the cellphone will soon come to an end, making way for a new type of technology that will dominate the world.

He says that wearable technology, specifically glasses, will take the place of mobile phones in the near future.

‘Everyone who has glasses will upgrade to smart glasses’

Speaking at an annual Meta event, the tech CEO said that “I think that it’s pretty easy to wrap your head around [the idea that] there are already 1 to 2 billion people who wear glasses on a daily basis.

“Just like everyone who upgraded to smartphones, I think everyone who has glasses is pretty quickly going to upgrade to smart glasses over the next decade. And then I think it’s going to start being really valuable, and a lot of other people who aren’t wearing glasses today are going to end up wearing them, too."

The comments came at the presentation of the Oculus Quest 3S, a new, more affordable ($299) type of wearable VR headset that was showcased to the expectant crowd.

Meta have long been powering the development of AI-powered, wearable smart glasses, having already announced Orion, a piece of tech they call “the most advanced pair of AR glasses ever made”.
