Not just Pit bulls and Rottweilers, this is the complete list of dog breeds banned in CA and the fine if you own one
Pit bulls and rottweilers account for the vast majority of human fatalities by dogs but they are the only breeds targeted by ordinances for public safety.

Roughly 78 million dogs reside in households across the United States according to the American Pet Products Association. While there are 200 breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club one that is not, pit bull, made up almost 8% of the US canine population in 2019 says DogBites.org, citing data from a survey that year.
Pits bull is an umbrella term used for several breeds that are generally considered affectionate and playful. However, this type of dog, which has short-haired coats, large, square heads and a muscular stocky build, became a dog of choice for illegal dog fights.
This has resulted in a stigma developing around this type of dog, of them being aggressive and led to breed specific legislation targeting pit bulls in the name of public safety. But they aren’t the only type of dog that is considered “dangerous” and a potential public safety risk.
Dogs considered dangerous in California
There is no specific legislation in the state of California banning certain dog breeds. However, there are some regulations in place depending on the circumstances including some specific to certain cities and communities. For example in San Bernardino County, pit bulls and pit bull mixes must be spayed and neutered except under certain circumstances.
And this is not just in California. Across the United States some 1,200 cities and 42 US counties have breed-specific laws in place. Depending on the breed of dog, your insurance company may not cover any damages caused by your dog, typically for doberman pincher, pit bull, or rottweiler.
Among other dogs that are often considered dangerous or aggressive include akitas and German shepherds. It’s import for dog owners, and people looking to acquire one for their household, to inquire with the local government on any legislation or regulations that may be in place to avoid fines o porblems with the authorities.
Dog bites can be expensive
Not only can dog owners be liable for having to pay fines for not following local and state laws, ordinances and regulations if your dog causes harm you may find yourself in court. And the average dog bite lawsuit can add up, surpassing $68,000 in California in 2023, the state with the most claims that year, according to the Insurance Information Institute (III).
While the average cost per claim dropped in 2023 nationally, over the past decade the average has risen 82.5%. NerdWallet reports that the average cost of dog insurance nationally, for accident and illness, is $676 per year based on North American Pet Health Insurance Association data.
