Oceangate aftermath: Billionaire reportedly wants to explore Titanic wreck in a submersible
Despite the disaster that was the Titan submersible, that’s not stopping another billionaire from exploring the wreckage of the Titanic.

The Titan submersible suffered a catastrophic fate. Step up, Triton.
Nearly two years have passed since the catastrophic implosion of the Titan submersible during a journey to the Titanic in June 2023. That accident, which resulted in the tragic loss of five lives, prompted a pause in underwater tourism to the historic wreck site.
However, interest in the sunken ship has not died down. Instead, a new, secretive venture is now in motion. Sources indicate that a billionaire—whose identity is intentionally kept under wraps—is planning a roughly $10 million voyage to the Titanic, aiming to become the first person to revisit the site since the Titan disaster.
“Going down there will cost $10 million”
This isn’t the same technology that led to the tragedy. Triton Submarines—led by CEO Patrick Lahey—currently has in development a state-of-the-art, $20 million manned submersible designed to strict safety standards. It’s expected to be fully operational by next year.
The Titanic lies about 12,500 feet beneath the North Atlantic. Its depth, combined with the wreck’s haunting remains, continues to draw explorers and wealthy thrill-seekers alike.
Speaking to the New York Post, Patrick Lahey, CEO of Triton Submarines, said that “besides it being a wreck of historical significance, the fact that it lies at such great depth makes it fascinating to visit. Titanic is a wreck that’s covered in marine life and soft coral. People want to go there for the same reason that they want to climb Mount Everest... I’m very excited to be building this and to change the narrative."
What’s more, a source told the same outlet that “I heard that somebody is going down to the Titanic in a couple weeks. What I can tell you is that it’s a billionaire. Going down there will cost $10 million. You would recognise his name. He’ll want to make an announcement that he is the first person to go to the Titanic since the tragedy.”
