Update:

In a move that has generated a typical, celebrity-themed buzz on both sides of the Atlantic, Hollywood actor George Clooney, his wife Amal Clooney and their eight-year-old twins have officially become citizens of France, according to announcements published by the French government this week.

The naturalisation decree was listed in the Journal Officiel, the official government register, confirming the family’s change of nationality status.

For the Clooneys, the decision marks a long-term shift in the family’s lifestyle and priorities. Several reports note that France’s strong privacy laws, which make it harder for paparazzi and media to intrude into the lives of children and private residents, played a significant role in the couple’s choice to embrace French citizenship.

In recent interviews, George Clooney has openly praised these protections, saying that life in southern France allows his children to grow up away from the glare of international celebrity culture.

“I was worried about raising our kids in LA”

“I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood,” Speaking to the New York Times, Clooney said. “I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France – they kind of don’t give a sh*t about fame."

“I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids,” he said.

The Clooneys have lived largely outside the United States for several years and made a high-profile property purchase in 2021 when they acquired Domaine du Canadel, a large former vineyard and farmhouse near the village of Brignoles in Provence. Clooney added: “Growing up in Kentucky, all I wanted to do was get away from a farm, get away from that life. Now I find myself back in that life. I drive a tractor and all those things. It’s the best chance of a normal life.”

It has since become the centre of their family life. Local officials describe the family as approachable and integrated into the community, with the children attending school locally and the couple participating in town events.

Clooney will retain his American citizenship while now also holding French nationality. Amal Clooney, an international human rights lawyer born in Lebanon and raised in the United Kingdom, was naturalised under her maiden name, Amal Alamuddin. Their twins, Ella and Alexander, who were born in London in 2017, also received citizenship as part of the decree.
