Only in France: You won’t believe what thieves stole from this farm worth over $100,000
It might not be the royal jewels like those stolen recently from the Louvre, but a caper last week stole “the fruit of a year’s work” from a French farmer.
Just ahead of the holiday season, tragedy struck the L’Escargot Des Grands Crus snail farm in Bouzy, near Reims. Thieves made off with “the fruit of a year’s work,” manager Jean-Mathieu Dauvergne told France 3.
The methodical operation searched all the buildings leaving the shop’s shelves and refrigerators almost empty, including what was in the processing room, of fresh and frozen snails. In total, nearly 450 kilos (over 990 lbs.) of snails were stolen, an inventory worth roughly $104,000.
“A real blow to the entire team”
L’Escargot Des Grands Crus informed the public of the heist posting on its Facebook page: “This is definitely not the post we thought we would be writing as the holidays approach. We were victims of a burglary, and our stock of fresh and frozen snails was stolen.”
“The coming weeks are usually the most important for us... so this is a shock, a misunderstanding, and a real blow to the entire team,” it continued. The company said that it would do their “best to restock our stocks to satisfy you for the holidays.” Adding that they appreciated all the “support and understanding” they’ve received.
The robbery was discovered on Monday morning last week. Initial findings from the police investigation found that the thieves cut through the fence surrounding the farm allowing them to enter the property discreetly reported France 3.
Along with the nearly all of L’Escargot Des Grands Crus’ stock, the criminals also made off with other local products made by some of the purveyor of gourmet snails had stocked in their store.
“Everything was stocked to start December and the entire holiday season,” Dauvergne explained to the news outlet. “It was my year-end stock; this was the home stretch. We had exactly the right amount to get through the holidays with peace of mind.”
