Powerball $2.04 billion record jackpot draw: winning numbers, total amount and winner
$1.9 billion Powerball draw: live updates
State lottery responsible for delaying Powerball drawing revealed
Much consternation was created Monday night, and rumors about why, when the Powerball drawing was delayed for the astronomical jackpot estimated at $1.9 billion. After ten hours the eagerly awaited six numbers were announced and after 40 weeks there was finally a winner.
Now it has been revealed what caused the delay. The Minnesota Lottery announced that there had been a problem with their sales verification system causing a processing delay.
“At no time was the integrity of the process compromised. The delay was necessary to confirm the Powerball drawing could be conducted securely and accurately,” they explained in a statement.

There was more than one winner in Powerball $2.04 billion drawing
While the Powerball jackpot stole the show for good reason ending up a record $2.04 billion dollars, with a cash prize just shy of $1 billion, there were several other winners of more humble amounts. Twenty-two tickets across sixteen states matched five numbers to give the lucky holder a $1 million prize and one ticket in Florida got the x2 Power Play to take home $2 million.

Where was the winner of the Powerball from?
The was ticket purchased at Joe’s Service Center in Altadena, California, and matched all six numbers: 10,33,41,47,46 and Powerball number 10.
As of now, no one has come forward to collect the prize money.
The lump sum payment would be $997.6 million after taxes have been applied, as well as deductions for the money won by other winners.

Powerball winner won't pay state taxes on winnings
The winner of the historic $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot was lucky in two ways, getting all six numbers right and having purchased the ticket in California. Thanks to the latter that as yet unknown individual will only pay federal taxes on the winnings.
While that will whittle the cash purse of nearly $1 billion down by around $369 million going to Uncle Sam they won’t be hit with a state tax bill of say $147 million if they had bought the ticket in New York.
California is one of eight states that doesn't tax lottery winnings. The others include Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming.

The winning ticket for the record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot was sold at Joe’s Mobil station in Altadena, California. As an incentive to retailers to sell lottery tickets, they get one half of one percent of the winning ticket prize sold in their store.
That worked out to a cool $1 million for Joe Chahayed. He also happens to be the father-in-law of former Cincinnati Bengals nose tackle Domata Peko. While the 75-year-old could use the money to enjoy the rest of his golden years, he has no plans of soing so.
“I’m 75, still young. I will be here tomorrow at 6 o’clock. I love work,” he said.

One winner scoops record Powerball jackpot
After reports that the Powerball lottery would be rolled over for another day, it has emerged that there is one lucky winner, who will scoop a $2,040,100,000 payout - obviously that prize will be subject to 24% federal tax plus additional taxes. The official Powerball site was updated with the winning numbers: 10 33 41 47 56 Powerball: 10 and notification that the jackpot has been won.
Double play results: 1 21 27 29 40 Powerball: 18
Apart from the jackpot winner, there were 11,206,807 winners of lower prizes. The new Powerball lottery will commence on Wednesday 9 November with a new jackpot - $20 million.

Powerball, state tax and biggest cash prizes by state
The lucky winner of the Powerball lottery will have to pay tax on their winnings - federal tax at 24% and in many cases, state tax as well - the amount varies from state to state. In most cases, the payout is subjected to state tax between 3% and 8.82%. But in eight states - California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming, no state taxes are applied on lottery winnings, which makes them the states with the highest payouts.
Jackpot winnings, whether by a single or multiple winners must be declared in next year's tax return. The Internal Revenue Service will take 24% in federal taxes, plus additional taxes on top as such a windfall would put the winner right into the top federal tax bracket.
Five states don’t participate in the national lottery at all: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.
When is the next Powerball draw?
The next Powerball draw, in which the jackpot will be an eye-popping $2.3 billion, is due to take place on Wednesday 9 November at 10:59pm ET (7:59pm PT) - assuming there are no hitches, of course…
As always, the stated amount is the figure that winners will get if they receive the money in instalments over the course of three decades. The lump-sum payout will be smaller - if still a lot of money. You'd get a pre-tax sum of around $1.12 billion.

Powerball confirms no grand prize winner
"The Powerball jackpot rolled again," says Powerball, meaning that tomorrow the grand prize drawing will increase to a staggering $2.3 billion. A lottery winner could become a billionaire just by purchasing a Powerball ticket. However, in the end, a prize of that size could be shared between multiple players.
The drawing on Wednesday also breaks lottery history as it will be the 41st consecutive drawing. Powerball has never gone forty drawings without a jackpot winner.
Powerball is played in the majority of states, and the organization is hearing of players "from the non-participating states - Utah, Nevada, Hawaii, Alaska and Alabama - crossing borders to pick up their own entries."
Monday's ticket sales hit all-time highs, which officials said contributed to the delay.

There will again be a roll-over jackpot in the next Powerball draw, after there were no tickets that matched all six numbers on Tuesday for the drawing that was supposed to take place on Monday 7 November. The estimated jackpot now stands at $2.3 billion.
Tickets can be purchased online, for more information on how, check out our guide.
A historic moment in lottery history in the United States... and with no winner announced, the jackpot continues to grow.
Make sure to compare your ticket to the winning numbers while you may not have the six-number combo, millions are still up for grabs.
More chances to play
Just because the jackpot will roll over does not mean that players have not won an enormous sum of money. For every correct number, the value of the prize increases, so all those who purchased tickets make sure that they are not throwing away any possible winnings.
The Colorado Lottery informed followers that many states are still identifying winners. Additionally, all those who purchased tickets in the state after 7:30 pm yesterday will be able to use those for Wednesday's historic drawing worth $2.3 billion.

The organization has already announced that no states sold a ticket with the numbers drawn, meaning Wednesday's prize will grow to $2.3 billion.
This is an unprecedented situation, and with no winner called after a security delay put the drawing on pause, news of the historic cash prize could motivate even more people to play.

Still no word on when $1.9 billion Powerball drawing delay will end
Americans that bought a Powerball ticket woke up this morning to the news that the drawing had been delayed due to technical issues with the play data from one of the 48 jurisdictions that participate in the lottery.
While technical issues have occurred in the past according to lottery officials, this is the first time that the jackpot has hit such an astronomical height leaving ticketholders staring at their devices for the slightest of news as FOX ( of New Orleans kindly pointed out.

One state did not meet security protocols in the $1.9 billion Powerball drawing, which was meant to take place Monday night. Who can we blame for the delay?
Powerball releases another update for those who have awakened to the news that no numbers have been drawn.
The delays continue after "one of the participating states was unable to process its ticket sales and submit its player data by the time last night’s draw should have gone ahead."
However, the organizers have clarified that the numbers should be expected later this morning.
Watch the Powerball delay as it happened
In this short news clip you can watch the moment when we were all left with a $1.9-billion cliffhanger.
Several hours later and we're hopefully closer to knowing the result... but we don't know exactly when.
The 'world' is watching
Like the rest of America, and the world, I think we’re all eager to find out when this historic jackpot will eventually be won.

Still no estimated time for the delayed draw, but make sure to keep hold of your tickets for when you need them. You can then use the Powerball Checker to find out if you are a winner.
The Multi-State Lottery Association has also confirmed that it won’t be revealing which state failed to meet its security protocols in time. “It’s against our policy to name the lottery that is experiencing the delay.”
Did you already buy a Powerball ticket?
If you answered that question in the affirmative, you may not want to read the rest of this article.
Remember, in order to win, you need to match five normal lottery numbers — white balls numbered 1-through-69 — plus the Powerball: a red ball numbered 1-through-26. Each Powerball ticket costs $2, plus you have the option to pay an extra $1 to activate the power play, a multiplier that increases your payout for non-jackpot prizes.

While we continue to patiently (!?) wait for the winning numbers, here's a piece we did recently looking back on the biggest lottery hauls in history.
Occasionally, very occasionally, dreams do come true.
Powerball wanting limelight
Given that today (it's Tuesday now, folks) is election day for the midterms, you can maybe understand lottery officials wanting to get in on the attention factor by delaying the massive draw.
Don't worry, I'm not actually suggesting this 'process glitch' was on purpose for this reason, but I do hope that a delayed draw doesn't interfere with people getting out and voting.

Powerball official update
Not much has changed in the last several hours but just to confirm, this is the current position from the officials:
'The Powerball drawing scheduled for Monday, Nov. 7 remains delayed. Currently, one participating lottery is still processing its sales and play data. Powerball requires all 48 participating lotteries to submit their sales and play data prior to the winning numbers being selected. Once Powerball receives the outstanding submission, the drawing can proceed.
'Powerball has stringent security requirements to protect the integrity of the game and remains committed to holding a drawing that gives all players a fair chance to
win.
'Due to the length of the draw delay, it is likely that we will not know the official results of the Powerball drawing until Tuesday morning. Players should hold onto their tickets.'
What time this Tuesday morning is anyone's guess, but we're not taking our eyes off it.

It’s not often that over $1,000,000,000 is up for grabs but now that it is, we thought we’d have a look at some less practical uses for it.
Although most people’s minds immediately start dreaming about what they would do with that sort of money - a new house, or car, or maybe even a yacht - my mind began pondering how awesome it would be to pile up all those dollar bills to see how far it stretched. This is how the official Powerball home page looks now with a 'results pending' warning below the total cash prize of 1.90 billion dollars. With it just gone midnight (PT) and 03:00 am in Eastern, this is now very much a Tuesday Powerball.
Security protocols causing delays
With no news on when the Monday draw will be conducted, the official motive for the delay appears to be security related. "When the required security protocols are complete, the drawing will be performed under the supervision of lottery security officials and independent auditors," the state Lottery said.

A regular Powerball ticket costs $2. To play, you must pick five numbers from 1 to 69 and a Powerball number from 1 to 26.
If the six numbers you choose match those drawn, you win the jackpot. Steadily smaller prizes are also available if some, but not all, of your numbers come up.
The official Mega Millions webpage explains that, ‘no representative of Mega Millions would ever call, text, or e-mail anyone about winning a prize.’ And they offer much more advice as well as providing some handy tips.
Eight states do NOT tax lottery winnings
Nine states - Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Utah - have a flat income tax rate that’s mostly around the 5 percent mark. That means you’d have to pay up another $30m or so. The exceptions to that are Pennsylvania and Indiana, which would take 3.07% and 3.23%, respectively, from your winnings.
However, the states below would not charge tax on your winnings.

Like most other income the winnings are subject to tax laws.
Before the money reaches a winner, the bounty was subjected to a 24 percent federal tax on gambling winnings as US tax residents must pay a top rate of 37 percent on annual earnings over $539,900, so you’ll be liable for the 13 percent difference between that and the 24 percent applied to gambling winnings.
One ticket matched all six numbers in the 29 July drawing to win the $1.337 billion prize. The final value was higher than the estimate of 1.28 billion, based on actual sales. However, after taxes it was worth $780.5 million cash.
