Update:

President Donald Trump has already pushed through major policy shifts in the first seven months of his second term, but MSNBC anchor Ali Velshi believes the Republican leader is only just getting started as he appears to work his way through the controversial Project 2025 playbook.

What is Project 2025?

Published in April 2023 by the conservative Heritage Foundation, Project 2025 is a 900-page blueprint that sought to “provide a detailed roadmap for transforming the federal government and implementing conservative policies in a future Republican presidential administration, according to the Project 2025 Tracker website.

Trump distances himself from Project 2025, then leans in

Although Trump repeatedly distanced himself from Project 2025 during his campaign, he has since appointed many of its authors to lead federal departments and agencies. As Velshi highlighted, the president appears to be pressing ahead with many of its ideas.

Key policies highlighted by Velshi

Velshi pointed to several initiatives that echo recommendations from the playbook, including:

  • Dismantling the Department of Education
  • Launching a White House “war on climate change”
  • Expanding ICE detention centers by 100,000 beds
  • Rolling back student loan forgiveness

“All of this adds up to a wildly successful first eight months for the conservative interest groups and think tanks that joined up to write Project 2025,” Velshi said. “And by the way, we’re not done. What could possibly go wrong?”

According to the Project 2025 Tracker, 47 percent of the blueprint’s proposals have already been completed.

Supporters and critics sharply divided on Project 2025

Supporters argue that the plan lays out clear steps to restore traditional values, reduce government inefficiency and overreach, and strengthen executive authority for more unified governance.

Critics counter that it undermines democratic institutions and checks and balances, politicizes law enforcement and the civil service, imposes restrictive social policies, and risks dismantling essential government programs and protections.
