Psychologists agree: people who need everything in order at home seek emotional control
Orderliness in the home can reflect a need for calm and emotional control in the face of daily stress.
Often, you can get a sense of a person’s state of mind from the condition of their room. Modern psychology suggests that the need to keep everything under control is often rooted in deeper emotional issues. Psychologist Sara Navarrete has said that, in many cases, people are trying to soothe inner turmoil.
In a society where life moves at such a fast pace, it’s becoming increasingly common to feel overwhelmed or suffer from chronic anxiety. As a result, many people look for ways to regain a sense of control, and tidying a closet or keeping the house spotless often helps them maintain calm, even if only temporarily.
Speaking to the newspaper HOLA, the specialist explained that the need to organize everything is not about aesthetics, but emotional tranquility: “External order often functions as a way to regulate the internal world. For some people, tidying up is not an aesthetic or practical matter, but an emotional one. When a person feels uncertainty, stress, mental chaos, or anxiety, tidying the house provides an immediate sense of calm and control.”
A mirror of emotional state
That’s why many people, after arguing with a partner or having a difficult day at work, end up cleaning the kitchen at eleven o’clock at night or organizing drawers. The psychologist noted that the home is often a reflection of a person’s emotional state.
“Many people feel that if their environment is tidy, they are too. It’s symbolic, a projection of the inner world onto the outside,” she says.
The reality is that the human brain needs a sense of predictability to feel safe. That’s why, according to the expert, “order conveys stability, structure, and a sense of control and mastery over the environment.”
This becomes especially evident during periods of intense emotional stress. When someone goes through a breakup, work-related pressure, anxiety, or major life changes, it’s common for them to become overly focused on details. In those moments, when it feels as though the important things are slipping through our fingers, we tend to cling to control over the most visible or manageable aspects of daily life.
