Psychologists agree: people with messy bedrooms tend to have one thing in common

Many people project a highly organised image in public yet struggle to keep their homes tidy. Clothes scattered across the floor or belongings piled on furniture may seem like simple untidiness, but many psychologists believe these habits can reveal much deeper aspects of our personality and daily behaviour.

Canadian psychologist Jordan Peterson argues that chaos in the bedroom often reflects difficulty managing responsibilities and maintaining a routine. For that reason, he recommends starting with small tasks such as making the bed and tidying the room during difficult periods, as these simple actions can help restore a sense of control.

Similarly, researcher Sam D. Gosling suggests that clean, orderly spaces are more commonly associated with people who are conscientious, responsible and focused on their work.

The link to creativity

A messy room may also have positive aspects. Researcher Kathleen Vohs argues that disorganised environments encourage people to break with convention and generate new ideas. According to her studies, individuals who live in spotless spaces tend to make more conventional choices, whereas those who live with a certain degree of disorder are often more original.

Experts caution, however, that a sudden change in household habits deserves attention. If someone has always been very tidy and suddenly begins to neglect their surroundings, it may indicate an underlying problem. Psychologist Kendra Cherry notes that conditions such as depression can make even basic household tasks feel overwhelming. In such cases, seeking professional help is advisable if the situation feels difficult to manage alone.
