More than 42% of Spanish workers say they do not feel motivated at work, according to recent data shared by Rafael Alonso, an expert in human resources and workplace wellbeing. This figure is higher than the global average, raising concern among specialists and companies because of its impact on employee performance and health.

In a video posted on TikTok, Alonso explains that demotivation is not simply about being tired, but about waking up without enthusiasm, carrying out tasks mechanically and feeling no recognition for what you do. “When we talk about demotivation, we’re talking about not seeing any meaning in what you do and gradually starting to disconnect from your own work,” the expert says.

After vacation periods, many workers return to their jobs with more stress, less energy and a sense of merely surviving the workday – a phenomenon that intensifies during Spain’s so-called January slump. This gradual disconnection can affect performance, relationships with colleagues and managers, and even mental health.

4 strategies for regaining motivation

Alonso recommends four practical steps that can be applied immediately:

First, rediscover the meaning of your work. “Ask yourself which part of your job does make sense to you, even if it’s a small one,” he advises.

Second, seek recognition and real feedback. Share your achievements, talk about what you contribute and avoid making yourself invisible.

Third, introduce changes to your daily routine. Respect breaks, set clear boundaries and connect with people you genuinely feel comfortable with.

Finally, take care of your personal wellbeing. Prioritize rest, healthy eating and exercise, even if your company does not actively encourage it.

According to the expert, identifying areas of meaning at work and putting wellbeing at the center is key to avoiding demotivation and reconnecting with your profession. “If you identify with this, it’s a clear sign that you need to recover purpose, boundaries and care in your working life,” he concludes.
