Reality or myth? Places that could be gateways to parallel dimensions according to experts
Exploring the intriguing locations around the world that are rumored to connect to alternate realities.

The allure of parallel dimensions has long captivated human imagination, inspiring countless tales of portals to other worlds hidden within our own. While mainstream science remains skeptical, various locations around the globe have garnered reputations as potential gateways to these mysterious realms... so I thought I’d take a brief trip around a few of them.
Location ideas for a mysterious trip
The Ranmasu Uyana Stargate in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka’s Ranmasu Uyana park houses a peculiar artifact known as the Sakwala Chakraya, or ‘Stargate’. Carved onto a rock surface, this chart-like carving has sparked theories suggesting it served as a portal to other worlds. Some believe it was a means of communication with extraterrestrial beings or a gateway to parallel dimensions.
However, mainstream archaeologists argue that there’s no concrete evidence to support these claims, attributing the carving to ancient cosmological or astronomical purposes.
The Peruvian Amazon’s mysterious portal
Deep in the Peruvian Amazon, explorer ‘Baby’ Trujillo claims to have discovered a dimensional portal near the legendary lost city of Paititi. Local legends speak of a cursed city where both people and animals vanish without a trace.
During his journey, Trujillo reported hearing strange voices inside caves and seeing cloud-like entities moving in and out of the jungle. He also found a gold ceremonial mask but hesitated to touch it due to stories of a deadly curse. According to him, the cave walls contain quartz and gold, which might activate electromagnetic fields – possibly explaining why animals and even people seem to disappear.
Locals in nearby villages, such as Capuli in Rioja, also tell stories of people vanishing without a trace near these caves, adding to the area’s mystery.
The fairy paths of Ireland
To be sure, Ireland is full of locations tied to supernatural folklore, and one of the most enduring myths is that of fairy paths - ancient routes believed to be portals between the human world and the realm of the fairies.
In certain areas, people claim to experience sudden time slips, strange lights, and an eerie sense of being watched. One of the most famous sites is Knockma Hill, where some believe stepping into the wrong place at the wrong time could take you somewhere... else.
While skeptics dismiss these tales as imagination, stories of people vanishing or mysteriously reappearing after years have been told in Ireland for centuries.
Mexico’s ancient ‘City of the Gods’
In Teotihuacán, Mexico, legends speak of an ancient portal hidden within the city’s temples. Known as the ‘City of the Gods’, Teotihuacán was a major pre-Columbian city where Mesoamerican civilizations performed complex rituals.
Some researchers believe that certain structures – especially the Pyramid of the Sun – are built over areas with strong electromagnetic fields, possibly giving rise to stories of supernatural experiences. Ancient texts describe priests communicating with divine beings and even “traveling beyond the physical world.”
While there’s no scientific proof of a portal here, Teotihuacán remains a place where history and mystery collide.
The mystery of Tennessee’s ‘mirror world’ experiment
In 2019, scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee embarked on an experiment that captured public imagination. Dubbed the search for a “mirror world,” the project aimed to detect evidence of a parallel universe identical to ours but invisible. The experiment involved attempting to observe mirror particles that, if found, could suggest the existence of such a parallel realm.
While the endeavor was groundbreaking, it did not involve opening a portal to another dimension, and as of now, no conclusive evidence has been reported.
Despite the theories and eerie experiences tied to these locations, science has yet to confirm the existence of portals to parallel worlds. In most cases, these stories stem from local folklore, unusual natural phenomena, or the human tendency to see patterns where none exist. That said, they’re still fantastic places to go visit... just try to avoid the peak periods.
