Remember the locations of the hundreds of stores that Starbucks closed in 28 states across the US in October

Starbucks is embarking on a significant reshuffle of its U.S. coverage, planning to close dozens of outlets and get rid of around 900 corporate roles as it looks to create what it calls a “a warm and welcoming” space “for every coffeehouse.”

The company anticipates ending the year with around 18,300 stores across the U.S. and Canada, while shrinking its North American total by roughly 1 percent, a huge amount when you take in the sheer scale of the brand.

News outlets have already confirmed that stores from states such as California, Illinois, Texas, Washington, and New York have been affected. In Los Angeles, for instance, locations in Hermosa Beach and downtown L.A. appear on the list. In Seattle, a handful of Pike Street venues have also closed.

On the closures, Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol, said last week: “I shared earlier this year that we were carefully reviewing our North America coffeehouse portfolio through the additional lens of our Back to Starbucks plan... During the review, we identified coffeehouses where we’re unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect, or where we don’t see a path to financial performance, and these locations will be closed.”

Starbucks Workers United hit out at the decision, saying: “It has never been more clear why baristas at Starbucks need the backing of a union. We’re demanding Starbucks finalise a fair union contract with 12,000 union baristas. For less than one average day’s sales, we can address the remaining items in the contract and move forward."
