Requirements to receive STAR checks in New York: schedule and who can apply

In June, New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced that nearly 3 million residents across the state will benefit from the School Tax Relief (STAR) program, which will deliver a total of $2 billion in tax relief.

The STAR program helps eligible homeowners and seniors lower their property tax bills. While some recipients receive this benefit as a property tax exemption, others receive it as a tax credit in the form of a check mailed during the summer and fall.

“The start of summer is also the start of STAR tax relief season for millions of New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said in a statement. “From tax credits and energy rebates to our expanded child tax credit and middle class tax cuts, we’re continuing to put more money back in New Yorkers’ pockets.”

How much will STAR recipients receive?

Most homeowners who qualify for the Basic STAR credit will receive a check ranging from $350 to $600.

Most seniors who qualify for the Enhanced STAR credit will receive a check ranging from $700 to $1,500, according to the governor’s announcement.

Eligibility requirements for STAR checks

You may qualify for the Basic STAR program if you:

  • Own your home.
  • Use it as your primary residence.
  • Have a combined household income of $500,000 or less.

You may qualify for Enhanced STAR if you:

  • Are 65 or older.
  • Own your home.
  • Use it as your primary residence.
  • Have a combined household income of $107,300 or less for 2025 benefits, or $110,750 or less for 2026 benefits.

New York State determines eligibility using your tax return from two years earlier. For the 2026 STAR program, the state will use your 2024 federal tax return.

STAR check payment schedule

STAR checks have already begun to arrive and will continue to be mailed to eligible recipients across New York throughout the summer and fall.

If your STAR payment has already been approved, New York State also provides an online tool where you can check when your payment is expected to arrive.
