Russia turns on one of its flagship autarkic megaprojects to end the country’s energy crisis
A large-capacity, environmentally friendly facility in Dagestan is expected to generate nearly 900 GWh of electricity each year.
Novolakskaya Wind Farm, located in the Republic of Dagestan, is the largest wind energy project in Russia. The facility has now been fully commissioned by Rosatom Renewable Energy.
The 300 MW wind farm added 59 turbines in the second phase of development, contributing a combined 147.5 MW of capacity. Overall, the Novolakskaya project features 120 wind turbines rated at 2.5 MW each and has begun supplying electricity to Russia’s unified power grid. Rosatom expects the facility to generate approximately 880 GWh of electricity annually.
A major asset for a region long plagued by power shortages
Novolakskaya is Rosatom’s first wind farm in Dagestan and its tenth renewable energy project in Russia. According to the state-owned company, the development has achieved its highest level of equipment localization to date, with key components manufactured within Rosatom’s own industrial divisions.
The wind farm delivers much-needed generating capacity to a region that has struggled with chronic power shortages. Fyodor Shchukin, acting head of the Republic of Dagestan, said the project represents far more than the launch of another environmentally friendly energy facility. He stressed that Dagestan has endured significant electricity deficits for years, with power outages disrupting daily life for residents and hampering economic growth. “The Novolakskaya Wind Farm is a real and significant step toward strengthening the region’s energy security,” Shchukin said.
