Update:

Salish Matter doesn’t think of herself as famous. Can you believe it? The *checks notes* YouTube star chose to speak to the NY Post about her rise to notoriety, explaining how she began to star in her father’s videos before creating a name for herself.

Of course, I jest: her family has more YouTube subscribers than my entire apartment block - which looks like a Hollywood hotel on Golden Girls casting day - has had hot dinners, and that’s the way to measure success these days.

Miss Matter is not your typical teenager: at just 16 years old, she has already become a defining face of the, gulp, Gen Alpha creator generation. Her journey from early YouTube appearances to selling out real-world events illustrates how fame has evolved/regressed [delete as appropriate], and how a young creator can and must navigate both acclaim and controversy.

Salish’s path to global attention all started almost six years ago on her father’s YouTube channel. Jordan Matter, a well-known photographer and social media personality with millions of subscribers, featured Salish in one of his challenge-style videos when she was only 10. From there, the rest is YouTube history.

“I feel like I am just a normal teenager”

I just wanted to work with her, and she was good on camera. It was fun. And so then the big question was, does she want to do this? That’s not an easy question for a 10-year-old to answer, but five years later, every week we’re still filming videos,” her father explained to The NY Post.

The father-daughter duo rapidly accumulated tens of millions of followers across platforms and the young girl has become one of the most recognisable teen influencers in the world. However, keeping her feet on the ground is one way that she has managed her success. Speaking to the outlet, Salish said: “I don’t think of myself as famous; I don’t like that word. I feel like I am just a normal teenager, but then sometimes people do come up to me, and that kind of reminds me of everything."

“So many people ask me” she says when the topic of her future comes up. “I feel like there’s an expectation that in junior year [of high school], you’re supposed to know what you want to do and have it all figured out and be applying for college applications,” she said.
