Satellite technology may have found something enormous beneath the Great Pyramid of Giza
The use of this technology makes it possible to identify possible chambers and cylindrical shafts hidden under the pyramid without the need to excavate.
A team of Italian researchers has used satellite radar imagery to identify large underground structures buried deep beneath the Great Pyramid of Giza. The findings, based on remote sensing rather than excavation, suggest the presence of multiple shafts and chambers below the iconic monument.
The study, titled “What really lies beneath the pyramids?”, reports that the team identified up to eight cylindrical shafts beneath the structure. At the lower end, two large cubic chambers appear visible, while within the pyramid itself researchers detected five vertical voids.
To reach these conclusions, the group relied on Synthetic Aperture Radar, or SAR, a technology that transmits signals from satellites in orbit. These signals bounce off the ground and are then processed using mathematical models to generate images of subsurface density.
Rather than breaking ground, the researchers chose this non-invasive approach, analyzing SAR data gathered by orbiting satellites and converting it into images designed to reveal variations in underground density.
Academic caution over radar interpretations
Reaction within academic circles has been measured. Egyptologists warn that radar imagery can produce shapes that resemble man-made structures without confirming their physical composition. Without excavation that penetrates the soil, determining what truly lies beneath remains challenging.
Some scholars suggest the detected formations may correspond to natural geological features rather than artificial shafts, noting that cavities are common in limestone terrain.
Similar discoveries have previously been reported on the Giza plateau, where the bedrock is not entirely solid. The limestone foundation contains natural fissures and voids, and earlier geophysical studies had already identified hollow spaces beneath the pyramids.
