Eating a varied diet is extremely important for feeling our best in everyday life. The body needs many different nutrients, but one essential mineral is magnesium, which is involved in key processes such as muscle function and the formation of bone mass.

Aging is a stage that eventually arrives for anyone who lives long enough, and magnesium deficiency is very common during this process. Mar Blanco, a pharmacist, consultant, food technologist, and expert with the Food and Nutrition Section of the Barcelona College of Pharmacists, explains that “chronic diseases and the aging process itself are often associated with low-grade chronic inflammation, which in turn is linked to low magnesium levels.

“For this reason, maintaining an adequate balance of micronutrients, including magnesium, may be an effective strategy to help promote healthy aging,” she adds.

A healthy and varied diet is essential for healthy aging

One good way to obtain the recommended amount of magnesium is by eating a wide variety of foods. Notable sources include legumes, nuts such as almonds and walnuts, seeds, whole grains, and green vegetables such as green beans and spinach. Non-refined breakfast cereals and dairy products like milk and yogurt are also good options.

Violeta Ramírez, a nutritionist and coordinator of the Nutrition and Food Working Group of the Spanish Society of Family and Community Medicine, emphasizes that “a healthy diet that includes vitamins, minerals, and fiber, incorporating all of the foods mentioned, is the best approach. Fewer supplements and a healthier lifestyle are the most important things.”
