Update:

Back in 2019, Italian woman Vita Carrapa passed away at the age of 95, leaving behind a will that clearly outlined how her inheritance should be used: three million euros ($3.24 million) dedicated to building a retirement home or a medical center.

In Salento, a region in Apulia in southern Italy, a committee was formed to oversee the use of her inheritance. But five years later, the project has resulted only in a half-finished rehabilitation center.

Antonio Giannuzzi, the executor of Carrapa’s estate, has voiced his frustration: “Ms. Carrapa’s wishes were not respected.” He also noted that the entire inheritance—built through years of family savings and sacrifices—has been diverted to a project that does not align with her will.

According to Il Corriere della Sera, the director of the new facility, Stefano Rossi, defended the decision, claiming the funds were used in accordance with the will’s instructions. His remarks have only fueled public criticism and debate.

The pro-hospital committee, formed in response to the controversy, has also spoken out, warning that not only is Carrapa’s legacy at risk, but so are more than 158,6 million dollars in state funding allocated for the new hospital under the Regional Plan.
