Update:

A shooting incident in New York City on Monday evening brought the whole of Midtown Manhattan to a standstill while officials secured the scene.

Reports from the scene suggest that the assailant entered a building and open fire. Subsequent CCTV camera footage has shown a male with a large rifle, showing his movements shortly before the attack.

The death toll has risen to four victims: three members of the public and one off-duty police officer, according to CNN. A fifth person was shot but not killed, officials have announced. The shooter was later confirmed to have died by self-inflicted gunshot.

In the hours after the attack the shooter was identified in multiple outlets as Shane Devon Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas. A motive for the shooting has not yet been announced.

“Please take proper safety precautions if you are in vicinity and do not go outside if you are near Park Avenue and East 51st Street,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams wrote on social media.

The incident took place at Midtown Manhattan’s 345 Park Ave., home to an office building that houses a number of huge corporations. Blackstone, KPMG, Bank of America and the NFL all have premises in the building.

The police officer killed has been identified as Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant. He was in his fourth year of service with the New York Police Department. Mayor Adams paid tribute to his bravery late on Monday evening.

“He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers,” Mayor Adams said of Islam. “He embodies what this city is all about. He’s a true blue New Yorker, not only in a uniform he wore.
