Social Security Administration issues warning: What beneficiaries must do to avoid losing payments

The Social Security Administration (SSA) issued a warning to certain beneficiaries, cautioning that they must update their payment method if they want to continue receiving their monthly benefits.

In September of last year, the agency phased out one of its oldest payment methods: paper checks sent by mail—a move that impacted thousands of beneficiaries. The new rule is part of a broader federal initiative to modernize payment systems and streamline service delivery.

“By adopting exclusively electronic payments, we aim to enhance efficiency, increase security, and ensure that beneficiaries receive their monthly payments on time,” the agency stated at the time.

Although the policy went into effect last September, some beneficiaries have still not updated their payment information. The SSA is warning them to do so as soon as possible, as the agency plans to complete the full transition to electronic payments for all beneficiaries this year.

What beneficiaries must do to avoid payment interruptions

Beneficiaries who previously received paper checks in the mail must switch to an approved electronic payment method to keep receiving their benefits. They can either sign up for direct deposit or apply for a Direct Express card:

• Direct Deposit: Payments are deposited directly into a checking or savings account.
• Direct Express Card: A prepaid debit card designed specifically for federal benefit payments.

“If you still receive payments by paper check, we encourage you to switch to electronic payments as soon as possible. Paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost, stolen, altered, or returned as undeliverable than electronic payments. Switching now ensures you receive your Social Security or Supplemental Security Income quickly and securely,” the SSA warned.

How to Update Your Social Security Payment Method

Beneficiaries can update their payment method online through their my Social Security account, via the Go Direct website, or by calling 1-877-874-6347. Registration can also be completed over the phone through the Treasury’s Electronic Payment Solution Center at 1-800-333-1795 or by contacting the SSA directly at 1-800-772-1213.

For direct deposit, beneficiaries can also update their payment details directly through their bank.
