The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes millions of payments each month to beneficiaries of its various programs. These payments are primarily intended for retired workers, but also include people enrolled in Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

The payment date is determined by the beneficiary’s day of birth. Recipients born between the 1st and 10th get their payment on the second Wednesday of the month. Those born between the 11th and 20th do so on the third Wednesday, and those born from the 21st to the 31st have their check sent on the fourth Wednesday of the month.

Those who retired before May 1997 and SSI beneficiaries, however, receive their checks at the beginning of each month, regardless of their date of birth.

How Social Security payments are computed

The amount you receive varies depending on several factors. For retired workers, the SSA takes into account the number of years worked, taxes paid to Social Security, and retirement age, among other aspects. Although each situation is unique, the agency provides official estimates of monthly check amounts.

According to official SSA data, the average monthly payment for a retiree in 2024 is $1,907 for individuals and $3,303 for couples filing jointly. Those who receive payments from SSI get an average check of $943 per month for individuals and $1,415 for couples.
