Bank of America and Wells Fargo, two of the largest financial institutions in the United States, will close all of their nationwide branches in early September.

National banks, including these two industry giants, typically adhere to the Federal Reserve’s holiday schedule. Because the Federal Reserve closes for all 11 official federal holidays—spanning from New Year’s Day to Christmas—commercial banks cannot clear standard transactions and close their physical doors as well.

When will Bank of America and Wells Fargo close in September?

Of the 11 federal holidays observed by the Federal Reserve, some land on fixed dates every year, while others shift. For instance, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November, meaning its calendar date changes annually. Furthermore, if a holiday falls on a Saturday, it is observed on the preceding Friday; if it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday.

So far this year, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and other major lenders have closed in observance of the following holidays: New Year’s Day (January 1); Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 19); Presidents’ Day (February 16); Memorial Day (May 25); Juneteenth (June 19); and Independence Day (observed on Friday, July 3, since July 4 fell on a Saturday).

The next holiday that will prompt Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and other national banks to halt all in-person operations across the U.S. will be Labor Day on Monday, September 7. Normal branch services will resume the following morning on Tuesday, September 8.

While physical locations will be locked, online banking platforms and ATMs will remain fully operational throughout the holiday weekend. Customers can still complete the majority of their day-to-day banking tasks. However, it is important to note that any payments or transfers scheduled on a federal holiday may not begin processing until the following business day.

Bank of America and Wells Fargo will also close on these dates

These banks will also close all their branches in the United States on the following holidays:

  • Columbus Day (second Monday in October): October 12.
  • Veterans Day: November 11.
  • Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November): November 26.
  • Christmas Day: December 25.
