April’s Social Security payment schedule gets underway on the opening day of the month, with over seven million Americans benefiting.
Millions of Americans are due to receive a benefits check from Social Security early next week, as the agency begins its April schedule of payments.
Who gets paid on April 1, 2025?
On Tuesday, April 1, the U.S.’s Social Security Administration (SSA) is scheduled to send out the latest monthly check to beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) scheme.
SSI payments typically go out on the first of each month, but this will actually be the first time since November that the SSA has been able to follow this schedule.
That’s because the SSI payment date is brought forward to the nearest working day if the opening day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday - as was the case in December, January, February and March.
Who receives SSI checks in the U.S.?
A program that currently has around 7.4 million beneficiaries across the U.S., SSI is aimed at people who have little to no income or resources, and are over-65 or have a disability.
Unlike other Social Security schemes such as retirement benefits, survivor benefits and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), eligibility for SSI does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes. It is a needs-based, rather than contribution-based, program.
How much do SSI recipients get?
According to figures published by the SSA this month, recipients of SSI benefits get an average monthly payment of $715.
Per the SSA, the top SSI check for an individual in 2025 is around the $1,000 mark: $967, to be precise. Meanwhile, eligible couples can receive up to $1,450.
The agency also notes that some recipients of SSI may get a supplementary payment from their state, depending on where they are in the U.S. You can check out which states offer this additional money on the SSA website.
When are other Social Security checks paid out in April 2025?

Most recipients of retirement benefits, survivor benefits and SSDI will be paid on one of three Wednesdays in April, depending on their date of birth:
Wednesday payment dates in April 2025
Weds., April 9: Recipients born on 1st to 10th
Weds., April 16: Recipients born on 11th to 20th
Weds., April 23: Recipients born on 21st to 31st
The above timelines does not apply, however, to anyone who began receiving their retirement, survivor or SSDI pay before May 1997.
This group of beneficiaries will be issued their monthly check on Thursday, April 3, regardless of their date of birth.
What about recipients of both SSI and regular Social Security?
If you receive both SSI and regular Social Security, you will be paid the former on April 1 and the latter on April 3.
New rules for updating Social Security bank details
Remember: If you need to update the direct-deposit information that you’ve given to the SSA, you can no longer do this over the phone.
