Social Security checks for up to $1,000 per person are going out on Tuesday, April 1: discover who gets a payment
Close to 7.5 million Americans stand to benefit when April’s Social Security payment schedule kicks off on the first of the month.

Millions of people in the United States are in line to receive a benefits check from the Social Security Administration (SAA) at the beginning of next week, as the agency kicks off its April schedule of payments.
Who gets paid on April 1, 2025?
On Tuesday, April 1, the SSA is due to send out the latest monthly check to beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.
Although the first of the month is the SSI scheme’s designated payment day, this will actually be the first time since November that the SSA has been able to stick to this schedule.
That’s because SSI distribution is brought forward to the nearest working day if the opening day of the month falls on a weekend or holiday - as was the case in December, January, February and March.
Who receives SSI payments in the United States?
A program that currently has just over 7.4 million beneficiaries across the U.S., SSI is aimed at people who have little to no income or resources, and are over-65 or have a disability.
Unlike Social Security schemes such as retirement benefits, survivor pay and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), eligibility for SSI does not depend on recipients’ payment of Social Security taxes. It is a needs-based, rather than contribution-based, program.
How much do SSI recipients get?
According to the SSA, recipients of SSI benefits get an average monthly payment of $715.
Per the SSA, the maximum SSI check available to an individual claimant is around the $1,000 mark: $967, to be exact. Meanwhile, eligible couples can receive up to $1,450 a month.
The agency also notes that some SSI recipients may get a supplementary payment from their state, depending on where they live. You can check out which states offer this extra money on the SSA website.
When are other Social Security checks scheduled in April 2025?
You’ll find the SSA’s complete schedule of payments for 2025 in this online pdf shared by the agency.
Most recipients of retirement benefits, survivor pay and SSDI will be issued their money on one of three Wednesdays in April, depending on their date of birth:
Wednesday payment dates in April 2025
Wednesday, April 9: Recipients born on 1st to 10th
Wednesday, April 16: Recipients born on 11th to 20th
Wednesday, April 23: Recipients born on 21st to 31st
The above timeline does not apply, however, to anyone who began receiving their retirement, survivor or SSDI benefits before May 1997.
This group of recipients will get their monthly check on Thursday, April 3, regardless of their date of birth.
What about recipients of both SSI and regular Social Security?
If you receive both SSI and regular Social Security, you will be paid the former on April 1 and the latter on April 3.
New rules for updating Social Security bank details
Remember: If you need to change the direct-deposit information that you’ve given to the SSA, you will no longer be able to do this by phone from April 14 onwards.
The only ways to update your bank details will be: using two-factor identification on the “my Social Security” online platform, or by going to a Social Security office in person.
