How much money do you get if you retire at age 61?

Month after month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of payments to beneficiaries. Currently, the SSA is preparing to send the third round of payments in July. The majority of beneficiaries are retired workers, but their survivors as well as people enrolled in Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) programs also receive benefits.

Typically, the distribution of these payments is based on the recipients’ date of birth. Those born between the 1st and 10th of each month receive their payment on the second Wednesday of the month. Those born between the 11th and 20th receive it on the third Wednesday, and those born between the 21st and 31st get their check on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Workers who retired before May 1997 and beneficiaries of the SSI receive their payments at the beginning of each month, regardless of their date of birth.

This is how Social Security payments are calculated

The exact amount of the payments varies depending on several factors. For retired workers, the agency considers the number of years worked, the taxes paid to Social Security during their working life, and the age at which the beneficiary requested retirement, among other factors. While each situation is different, the SSA provides official estimates on the amounts of these payments.

According to Administration data, in 2024, the average payment for a retired worker is $1,907 per month for individuals and $3,303 for couples filing taxes together. SSI beneficiaries receive up to $943 per month for individuals and $1,415 for couples.

These people will receive a $1,900 payment from Social Security on July 10

Taking into account the approximate distribution and amount of the payments, this Wednesday, July 10, beneficiaries born between the 1st and the 10th of the month will receive an average check of $1,900 from Social Security. The rest of the payments are distributed as follows:

  • Wednesday, July 17: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 11th and the 20th
  • Wednesday, July 24: Beneficiaries with a date of birth between the 21st and 31st

It should be noted that this figure is approximate and the exact amount will depend on various factors, including retirement age. For example, those who retire at age 62 can receive up to $2,710 a month, while those who delay their retirement to age 65 can get up to $3,426. Beneficiaries who wait until age 66 can receive up to $3,652 and those who wait until age 70 can receive a maximum payment of $4,873.

Likewise, Social Security payments are adjusted annually through the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA), which aims to match payments with inflation. In 2024, COLA increased payments by 3.2%.
