The renowned Athenian thinker already asked in antiquity which had greater value: money or knowledge, and reached the following conclusion.

Philosophy

Socrates, philosopher: “Prefer knowledge to wealth, for the one is transitory, the other perpetual”

If you had to choose only one, what would it be: all the money in the world or all the knowledge humanity has to offer? It is one of the greatest philosophical questions people can ask. In a world driven by markets and money, it can be difficult to determine which holds greater value today. Yet this debate is far from new.

More than two millennia ago, Socrates wrestled with the same question in ancient Greece. His conclusion is often summarized as: “Prefer knowledge to wealth, for the one is transitory, the other perpetual.” Although this is not a direct quotation from Socrates, it is a modern paraphrase that accurately reflects the core of his philosophy.

Most of what we know about Socrates has survived through the writings of his followers, especially his most famous student, Plato. Works such as Apology, Crito, and Phaedo offer valuable insight into Socrates’ understanding of reality, ethics, and the pursuit of wisdom.

Does money buy happiness?

Do you believe money can buy happiness? If your answer is yes, Socrates would likely disagree. According to the Greek philosopher, wealth alone cannot guarantee a fulfilling life. Knowledge, on the other hand, makes people freer, more thoughtful, and better equipped to make sound decisions.

Money is a material possession and, by nature, temporary and uncertain. Knowledge, however, enables us to better understand the challenges we face, make wiser choices, and create lasting value.

For the Athenian philosopher, wisdom and virtue were worth more than all the wealth in the world because they endure far longer and ultimately have greater value. What truly matters is developing the ability to understand the world around us. In Socrates’ view, a virtuous person is not corrupted by financial power. Instead, that person uses knowledge to benefit both themselves and the society in which they live.
