Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency due to life-threatening flooding affecting several parts of the state as an area of low pressure moves across the peninsula. The severe weather is expected to bring heavy rainfall with totals of 10 to 15 inches that will cause even more flooding across Southern Florida.

Broward, Collier, Lee, Miami-Dade, and Sarasota counties are included in the governor’s emergency decree as rainfall and flooding may continue to affect “the operational capability of critical infrastructure, including major interstates, state and county roadways, airports and schools” among other critical infrastructure.

Authorities are urging residents to stay put if you do not need to travel as the flooding can be life-threatening. The National Weather Service warns that “many areas are inundated with water [with] stalled cars & more rainfall is on the way.”
