2024 TAX SEASON

States which are sending Child Tax Credit payments in 2024 besides federal CTC

More and more states are offering their residents with children an additional tax break through child tax credits on top of the federal government credit.

Update:
States that offer a Child Tax Credit

Americans across the nation are filing out their tax forms to submit to the IRS if they haven’t already done so for the 2023 fiscal year. One of the major credits that families with children may be able to take advantage of is the Child Tax Credit worth up to $2,000.

This year, the federal benefit is partially refundable, and to start claiming the portion known as “Additional Child Tax Credit” worth up to $1,600, a specific earnings threshold needs to be met. According to the IRS, a filer cannot have an income greater than $200,000 (or $400,000 for joint filers) to claim the CTC.

Congress has talked about expanding this credit once again, but it will most likely not be anything like the expansion households got in 2021. However, this year, when you file your state taxes, depending on where you live, you may be able to claim a state-level Child Tax Credit.

States which are sending Child Tax Credit payments in 2024 besides federal CTC

There are 15 states that have some form of a state-level Child Tax Credit that can be claimed this year. These are either refundable, i.e. you don’t need to have any income in order to qualify for the tax benefit, or non-refundable. As well, some are a predetermined amount per qualifying child set by the state or a percentage of the credit amount that you are eligible for on your 2023 federal tax return filing.

Arizona Child Tax Credit

The Arizona Families Tax Rebate allows taxpayers to claim $250 per dependent under age 17 and $100 per dependent over age 17 as claimed on their 2021 returns. Up to three dependents can be claimed per taxpayer regardless of age. The maximum amount that a taxpayer can claim as single, head of household, and married filing separately is $750. The amount is double, $1,500, for those who are married filing jointly.

In order to be eligible, Arizona taxpayers must have claimed the state’s dependent tax credit “on their 2021 full year Arizona resident individual income tax returns (Arizona Form 140 or 140A).” As well as, they must have had “at least $1 of Arizona individual income tax on their 2021 returns or had at least $1 Arizona individual income tax on their 2020 or 2019 Arizona returns under the same filing status as their 2021 return,” according to the Arizona Department of Revenue website.

California Child Tax Credit

In California, the state CTC (Young Child Tax Credit) is worth $1,117 for each qualifying child. However, to claim the benefit, the taxpayer’s income must be equal to or less than $30,931. Only dependents under six qualify for the credit. Critically, one does not need to have earned an income to claim the credit, making it available to unemployed parents and guardians to care for young children.

Colorado Child Tax Credit

The Colorado Child Tax Credit ranges in value from ten to sixty percent of the federal CTC. Only taxpayers with dependents under six are eligible to claim this credit. Moreover, the filer’s income must be less than $75,000 ($85,000 for joint filers) to qualify for the credit. You can find instructions on how to file and determine the value of the credit on the worksheet that the Colorado Department of Revenue has published.

Idaho Child Tax Credit

Beginning in 2018, Idaho offered families a $205 non-refundable child tax credit for each qualifying child until the 2025 fiscal year. Children must now be 17 or under at the end of the tax year.

Maine Child Tax Credit

In Maine, the CTC is worth twenty-five percent of the federal Child and Dependent Care Credit. Childcare expenses, however, double the value of the credit, with the value being capped at $500.

Maryland Child Tax Credit

Similarly, in Maryland, those who claim the aforementioned federal credit may be eligible for the state’s CTC, which is worth thirty-two percent of the federal credit. The percentage that they can claim decreases progressively for single filers who earn more than $30,000, or $50,000 married filing jointly, until it completely phases out for those with incomes of $103,650 and $161,000 respectively, or more.

Massachusetts Child Tax Credit

Families are now eligible to receive $310 for each eligible dependent in 2023 from the Massachusetts Child and Family Tax Credit. That will rise to $440 for the 2024 tax year and thereafter. Child dependents must be under 13 years old, but other dependents may qualify.

Minnesota Child Tax Credit

Minnesota leads the country regarding the value of its CTC, which was signed into law by Governor Tim Waltz in 2023, making this the first year that the benefit can be claimed. The CTC is fully refundable and worth $1,750 per qualifying child. However, the income requirements limit the value and how many taxpayers can claim the credit on their return.

New Mexico Child Tax Credit

The value varies between $600 per child to $25 for those at the high end of the income spectrum. New York Child Tax Credit

In New York, families with children who qualify for the federal CTC may be eligible for the Empire State Child Tax Credit, worth thirty-three percent of the federal CTC or $100 for each qualifying child under age 17 on 31 December of the tax year they are being claimed (whichever is greater).

Oregon Child Tax Credit

the Oregon Kids Credit is available to taxpayers with incomes under $30,000. To claim the total value of the benefits ($1,000 per qualifying child), one must have an annual income of $25,000 or less. Only five dependents can be claimed, and the children must have been five or younger at the end of 2023.

Utah Child Tax Credit

Families with children between ages 1 to 3 may be able to claim a $1,000 credit per child. The income limits to qualify for the full amount are $54,000 for a couple or $43,000 for a family with a single parent.

Based on a parent’s federal income tax filing, the Utah child tax credit will be reduced by 10 cents on every dollar, phasing out completely for incomes $10,000 in excess of the full amount threshold.

Vermont Child Tax Credit

In Vermont, the value of the state’s CTC is $1,000 per child five years old or younger, but the income limits are much higher than those seen in other states. Filers must have an income no greater than $125,000 to receive the total value, and those with incomes up to $175,000 can receive a partial credit.
