Stephen Hawking, scientist: “We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the universe”

In 2018, the world lost one of the greatest scientific minds of the past century. British physicist Stephen Hawking made history through his groundbreaking contributions, which significantly expanded our understanding of the universe.

His life was devoted to science, even though it was profoundly shaped by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a debilitating neurodegenerative disease he was diagnosed with at the age of 21. Despite the illness, Hawking spent more than five decades making remarkable discoveries and advancing the field of astrophysics.

Among his greatest achievements, as he himself noted before his death, was the discovery that “black holes are not completely black.” Hawking radiation demonstrated that these incredibly massive objects emit radiation, gradually lose energy, and can eventually evaporate completely.

An inspiration through adversity

Beyond his extraordinary intellect, Hawking’s life became a powerful example of resilience, reflecting humanity’s determination to pursue knowledge even in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges.

That spirit is captured in one of his most iconic quotes: " We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special." Hawking played a pivotal role in making that understanding possible.

His brilliance was matched by an insatiable curiosity and a remarkable talent for making complex scientific ideas accessible to the public. Combined with his unique physical condition, these qualities earned him a level of global recognition comparable to that of Albert Einstein.

Although doctors initially gave him only three years to live, Hawking went on to become a global cultural icon, appearing in television shows around the world. He spent the latter part of his life using a wheelchair and communicating through a speech-generating device, whose distinctive synthesized voice became one of his defining characteristics.

Throughout his career, Hawking left behind countless memorable quotations on topics ranging from destiny and perseverance to the future of humanity and the mysteries of the universe. When he passed away at the age of 76, both the scientific community and the world lost a truly extraordinary genius.
