Stimulus checks and tax rebates in December 2023: which states pay them and amounts

Certain US states continue to send stimulus checks or tax refunds to residents. Find out which ones will issue payments in December, when and how much?

The sending of economic aid continues in certain states across the nation. Several are sending one-time tax refunds to their residents, some of more than a thousand dollars. Find out where they will be sent in December, when and how much.

Alabama

Tax refund checks begin to be sent to Alabama residents on December 1.

To be eligible, state taxpayers must have filed a 2021 Individual Income Tax return. The state Department of Taxation must have received it on or before October 17, 2022 to qualify.

The amount of the refund is up to $300 for taxpayers who filed a joint return and $150 for single taxpayers. For those who use direct deposit for their tax refunds, the refunds will go to your bank account. If there is no account on file, the refund will be issued by check and sent via postal mail.

Alaska

The state continues to send the 2023 permanent fund dividend (PFD) of $1,312. Payments for 2023 (and prior year) dividend claims that are in “Eligible-Unpaid” status for the December 6 will be distributed on December 14.

Montana

Since June, the state has been sending out individual income tax refunds, which provide individual taxpayers with $1,250 or the amount on line 20 on Form 2, whichever is less.

Married couples filing jointly receive $2,500 or the amount on line 20, whichever is less. Refunds will continue through December.

New Mexico

The state has sent out refunds since June. Single taxpayers filing a 2021 personal income tax (PIT) return are eligible for a $500 refund and joint filers are eligible for a $1,000 refund.

Eligible residents have until May 31, 2024 to file the 2021 PIT return to receive their refund. If you filed this return in November you could receive your money in December. More details here.

Washington

Washington state residents have until December to apply for the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC), which offers payments between $50 and $1,200.

The WFTC is a recurring program and can be applied for each year. The deadline to claim the credit is December 31. It may take up to 90 days to process your request and receive your refund. Here all the details.
