Month after month the Social Security Administration (SSA) issues millions of payments to program recipients, with people with disabilities receiving the lion’s share of aid , after retired workers.

Through Supplemental Security Income (SSI), SSA offers monthly payments to low-income people with disabilities. However, this is not the only benefit the Administration provides; Among its many other programs, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) stands out, which grants financial assistance to low-income families to purchase nutritional food through an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card.

Since both programs are for people with limited income and resources, can you still apply for SNAP if you are an SSI recipient? That is, can you receive both forms of financial assistance at the same time? We will explain below.

Supplemental Security Income Program: Can I apply at the same time as the SNAP benefit?

The answer is yes. Yes, you can apply for SNAP at the same time as your SSI benefits, as one Program does not interfere with another. However, you should keep in mind that SNAP benefits also require compliance with a series of guidelines if you want to be a beneficiary.

To receive SNAP food stamps you must apply in the state in which you currently reside, as well as meet the gross and net income limits. According to SSA, “current households cannot have more than $2,250 in resources to qualify for benefits from SNAP”; however, if the person is disabled or over age 60, the resource limit increases to $3,500.

SNAP applications are available at any local Social Security office. For more information or personalized attention, contact the official SSA hotline directly at 1-800-772-1213.
