Alabama is one of the states that will provide relief to families by sending one-time tax refund checks due to a state budget surplus.

“It’s only right [...] that we give a fair share of this money directly back to the people of Alabama,” Governor Kay Ivey said, according to a statement shared by her office.

Thanks to our unwavering commitment to fiscal responsibility, one-time tax rebates will be with our hard-working Alabamians in time for the holidays,” added the state’s leader.

Tax refund up to $300 in Alabama: who qualifies

To be eligible for a refund, taxpayers in Alabama must have filed their 2021 Individual Income Tax return on or before October 17, 2022, and the state Department of Taxation must have received it within the same deadline. However, nonresidents, trustees, or anyone who was claimed as a dependent in the 2021 tax year are not eligible for a refund. The amount of each refund will depend on the taxpayer’s filing status, and the following are the amounts that will be sent:

  • $150 for singles, heads of household and married filing separately.
  • $300 for married people filing jointly.

When do refunds begin shipping?

The Alabama Department of Revenue (ALDOR) has announced that tax refunds will be issued starting from December 1, 2023. If you are eligible for a refund, the method of payment will depend on how you received your tax refund for the year 2021. If you use direct deposit, your refund will be deposited into your bank account. However, if there’s no account on file, your refund will be sent to you as a check through postal mail.

For those who did not receive a tax refund in 2021, you can expect a paper check to be mailed to you. It’s important to note that these refunds will not be taxable for Alabama income tax purposes.
