Update:

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. In fact, it’s estimated that over 2.25 billion cups are consumed every day. In our country, more than 80% of adults drink coffee regularly, averaging around 4.5 kg per person each year. Many even consider themselves “addicted” to the beverage, claiming they can’t go a single day without it.

That’s the case for Korean man PK Sanjun, who had been drinking two cups of black coffee a day for ten years. He decided to “quit” coffee for a week to see how his body would react without caffeine — a personal experiment he shared on RocketNews24, clarifying that it had “no scientific or medical basis,” and was purely a “personal experience.”

Sanjun begins by stating that he didn’t eliminate caffeine entirely — he still drank iced tea and jasmine tea during the week — but he quickly began to feel “sleepy.

“It felt like I was constantly surrounded by a thin layer of plastic wrap. I wasn’t exactly groggy, but I had a constant sense of sluggishness,” he said.

Coffee withdrawal?

He also noticed that he fell asleep more easily without his two daily cups of black coffee. “And I barely felt any irritability. Of course I wanted to drink it, but I can say I didn’t experience any bothersome withdrawal symptoms,” he added.

Sanjun compares coffee withdrawal to the process of quitting smoking. “You feel irritated if you don’t smoke for a few hours. Both coffee and tobacco are classified as addictive, but their levels of addictiveness are on completely different scales,” he wrote.

In short, PK Sanjun described his week without coffee as “a bit dull and foggy, but I was able to fall asleep much more easily.”
