Millions of coins and bills circulate everyday throughout the United States. Although the vast majority of coins are generally only worth their face value, some of them can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars to collectors.

Some pieces with errors that are in good condition can be worth a lot of money. According to the U.S. First Exchange website, the value of a coin or bill is determined based on three main factors: rarity, condition/grade of the coin or bill, and market conditions or demand.

The combination of these three factors determines whether a coin or bill is worth more than what it indicates.

According to the CoinHubs Instagram account, a small error in some pennies means they can sell for up to 60,000 times their face value. These valuable one-cent coins were only recently minted.

On all pennies, next to the base of Abraham Lincoln, you can see the initials of the coin’s designer, VDB. However, on some 2023 pennies, next to the initials “VDB” there is an additional V. That error has raised the coin’s value to hundreds of dollars.

Other valuable pennies

This is not the only penny that can be worth much more than its face value. Some of the most valuable 1 cent coins can fetch tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Looking through your spare change could be worth your while because aside from rare pennies, some exceptional quarters, dimes, nickels, and other coins could be worth a small fortune.

If you think you have a coin that may meet the characteristics of rarity, good condition and high demand, you can go to a pawn shop where they could give you something in exchange for it. To find out more about its possible value, you can also search for specialized Facebook groups, check eBay or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) website.
