The 533-foot superyacht that’s been sitting docked for 3 years, burning diesel to keep its billionaire owner cool
The Eclipse, owned by Roman Abramovich, has left the port where it has been for three years for a complete overhaul.

Since late 2022, the port of Muğla in Turkey has been guarding the superyacht Eclipse. What makes this unusual is that throughout this entire period, the ship’s generators have remained running. The reason? To keep the air conditioning on and protect its lavish interior and sensitive electronic systems from Turkey’s humid climate.
This unconventional method of maintenance is estimated to have cost around $600 million. For nearly 1,000 days, the yacht burned diesel fuel simply to preserve its condition, drawing attention not only to its astronomical value but also to the staggering cost of upkeep.
The Eclipse is far more than a luxury vessel. It boasts an anti-missile defense system, two helipads, a submarine capable of diving 50 meters, bulletproof glass, and partially armored hull plating. Inside, it features multiple swimming pools, a cinema, a nightclub, and numerous suites—all serviced by a crew of 60.
