The Big Help Out: what it is, what it consists of and how to volunteer at the Coronation of Charles III
The new British monarch is using his coronation to encourage people around the United Kingdom to volunteer in the ‘Big Help Out’. Here’s how you can join.
As part of the Coronation of King Charles III, a new nationwide initiative will begin to recognize the decades of public service by the monarch. The Big Help Out is calling on Brits to volunteer, encouraging people to help out in their communities. The event will take place two days after the King is crowned. The Big Help Out will take place on Monday 8 May, which will be a bank holiday.
The Big Help Out is being organized by Buckingham Palace in conjunction with over 1,500 charities with hundreds of thousands of opportunities to lend a helping hand. The aim is to reverse a trend of declining volunteerism by inspiring people to try volunteering for the first time and hopefully get them to do so on a regular basis in the future. Members of the Royal Family will be participating in some events as part of the Big Help Out, however, King Charles III and Queen Camilla will not.
How to sign up for the Big Help Out
People who are interested in signing up to help in their community can visit the Big Help Out website or download the app for Apple or Android onto their mobile. The app will allow you to search for volunteering opportunities in your community.
They range from helping the elderly or children or just spending some time with someone who needs a bit of company to working with a range of charities involved in animal welfare, environmental causes or sports, arts and culture, just to name a few of the categories available to choose from.
“If you can spare an hour…fantastic. The day?…amazing. If it becomes a regular thing, so much the better. If we all do a bit, it will really help a lot.”
