Travel Tuesday is to travel what Black Friday is to electronics. Airlines, hotels, and other travel-related businesses offer deals and discounts during this 24-hour period. While it’s not as popular as other shopping days like Small Business Saturday or Black Friday, Travel Tuesday, which falls on December 3 this year, has steadily gained traction.
How it all began
Travel Tuesday started with Hopper, an app that tracks airline prices over time and alerts users to the best times to buy. Hopper spearheaded this trend by offering significant travel discounts, prompting others in the industry to follow suit. This year, Hopper is offering discounts of up to 30% on hotels in destinations such as Paris, San Diego, Bali, and Sydney.
Hotel deals will be available
Several platforms and hotel chains are offering enticing deals this Travel Tuesday:
- Expedia: Customers will find discounts of up to 30% on hotels and up to 15% on rental cars. To access these deals, users must register for a free membership or already be a member. Note that not all rental cars are included in the sale, so it’s worth checking availability for your upcoming trip.
- Hotels.com: Offering the same 30% hotel discount as Expedia, travelers must book by December 4, 2025, and travel by December 15, 2024—a relatively narrow window for flexibility.
- Vrbo: This platform, also owned by Expedia, is offering discounts on private vacation homes in destinations like Gatlinburg, TN; Orlando, FL; and Breckenridge, CO. Longer stays may qualify for discounts of up to 20%.
- Hilton: Although not exclusive to Travel Tuesday, Hilton is offering 20% off stays of at least two nights when booked at least seven days in advance. This promotion runs through the holidays, with bookings required by January 5, 2025, for stays through April 21, 2025.
