The CIA, the United States’ foreign intelligence service, has a primary mission to gather, process, and analyse information that may impact U.S. interests worldwide, primarily through human intelligence.

To achieve this, the agency relies on contacts, informants, and agents from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise. Recently, the CIA updated its profile on X (formerly Twitter) with new methods for reaching out, and is currently seeking informants in three specific countries:

How you can collaborate with the CIA

The United States is actively seeking new informants in China, Iran, and North Korea. To this end, it has released messages in Farsi, Chinese, and Korean, urging citizens of these countries to contact U.S. authorities. “We want citizens of authoritarian regimes to know that we are open to working with them,” reads a statement. To ensure their safety, the U.S. provides detailed instructions on using encrypted VPNs and secure browsers. A similar approach was used in Russia after its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

In Iran, collaborating with the CIA is considered high treason, punishable by imprisonment, torture, and even the death penalty. In North Korea, where international tourism is set to resume in December, the consequences are similarly severe, with forced labor added to the list of punishments. China also imposes harsh penalties, including prison and death, for anyone found guilty of treason.

Any unauthorised collaboration with a foreign intelligence agency, such as the CIA, could be illegal and classified as espionage under Spanish law. In March, it was revealed that two agents from Spain’s National Intelligence Centre (CNI) had collaborated with the CIA. One of them, a naval officer who headed the CNI’s Russian branch, provided classified information about Moscow and is now in prison. The second agent, who worked under him, was released.

In Spain, the CNI is responsible for both intelligence and counterintelligence services. Any cooperation with foreign agencies must be authorised and coordinated through them. If you’re interested in working for the CNI, you can contact them here.
