On his first day as president, Donald Trump issued an executive order requiring most federal workers to return to the office. During and after the pandemic, work-from-home programs were extended for some public employees, but many of those arrangements are now coming to an end. Republicans have long advocated for a return to in-person work for federal employees, but the Biden administration resisted, arguing that remote work programs help retain workers in the public sector and represent only a small portion of the total federal workforce.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics as of December 2024 shows that only about 13 percent of federal workers work from home on a permanent basis, while two-thirds complete all their hours in the office.

When will the order go into affect?

As for when those who currently work from home will be required to return to the office, the order is not clear. “Heads of all departments and agencies" are asked to "terminate remote work arrangements" under their management "as soon as practicable."

The order makes clear the Trump administration is not seeking to reduce remote work by limiting the number of days an employee can work from home, instead it aims to see workers in the office on a full-time basis. However, that does not mean that agency and department leaders will not have the authority to "make exemptions they deem necessary." If you have a remote work arrangement, you will need to speak with your boss and management team to see if it can be extended under the new rules.
