After days of debate in Congress—and despite hundreds of criticisms—the One Big Beautiful Bill, proposed by President Donald Trump, is now a reality. Passed by a slim majority in both chambers, the sweeping legislation was signed into law on July 4th, Independence Day.

This bill sets the federal budget for the upcoming year, triggering immediate changes across various sectors and government programs. At its core, the One Big Beautiful Bill calls for a multi-billion dollar investment in border security and introduces permanent tax cuts that will primarily benefit middle- and upper-class families.

However, to fund these measures, the bill includes a series of significant cuts in other areas—reductions that will directly impact low-income families who rely heavily on social safety net programs.

According to analysts at The Los Angeles Times, the plan will slash more than $1 trillion from Medicaid, food stamps, and other essential programs that provide basic needs like food and childcare for struggling households.

Any cut to that program [Medicaid] will have an impact on children, whether it’s pediatric practices that depend on Medicaid to stay open or children’s hospitals,” said Lisa Costello, a pediatrician and chair of the federal policy committee for the American Academy of Pediatrics, in an interview with The Los Angeles Times.

While the legislation also expands tax credits for parents and establishes $1,000 “Trump Accounts” for newborns, experts argue that these initiatives will not compensate for the loss of vital benefits—particularly for younger Americans. The bill has also sparked concerns about a follow-up plan that could impose even deeper cuts in the near future.
