The minimum wage in the United States hasn’t changed in more than 10 years. The last increase was made 14 years ago, marking the longest period without an increase since the base salary was created in 1938.

According to the State Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates report shared by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2022, these are the highest-paying jobs in the state of California: dermatologists, radiologists, cardiologists, psychiatrists, surgeons (in general), CEOs, physicians (pathologists), oral and maxillofacial surgeons, pilots, co-pilots and airline flight engineers, and nurse anesthetists.

Here are the 10 top-paying jobs in the state as well as their median annual wages:
- Dermatologists, with a median annual salary of $371,450
- Radiologists, $339,140
- Cardiologists, $332,920
- Psychiatrists, $311,950
- Surgeons (general), $286,080
- Executive Directors, $275,040
- Physicians (pathologists), $258,090
- Oral and maxillofacial surgeons, $257,690
- Airline pilots, co-pilots and flight engineers, $252,110
- Nurse Anesthetists, $246,510
These employment and wage estimates are calculated with data collected from employers in all industry sectors in metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas in California, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Healthcare jobs are the best paying in California
Following the federal trend, in the state of California, jobs in the health sector are the best paid. According to the BLS, employment in health care occupations will grow about 13% by 2031, much faster than the average for all occupations. This would add about two million new jobs in the country.
