Update:

Later this week, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is due to send out an early payment to certain benefits recipients in the United States.

Who gets paid by the Social Security Admin on July 31?

On Friday, July 31, beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income scheme (SSI) are scheduled to receive their monthly money for August 2026.

Why the ahead-of-schedule SSI payment?

SSI is normally issued on the first day of each month, but August’s payment date has been brought forward by 24 hours as next month begins on a weekend day. This will be the second batch of program benefits sent out this month, after July’s SSI was paid on Wednesday 1.

Who is eligible for SSI?

A needs-based benefit with 7.3 million beneficiaries across the U.S., SSI is for low-income, low-resource individuals who are over 65 or have a disability.

Unlike the SSA’s Social Security program - which pays retirement, disability and survivor benefits to 71.3 million people nationwide - eligibility for SSI does not depend on claimants’ work record.

Learn more about the SSI scheme’s eligibility criteria on the SSA’s official website.

Supplementary state payments

Some SSI beneficiaries can get an additional monthly payment from their state. Learn more about the states that provide this supplement on the SSA website.

How does the Social Security Admin make benefits payments?

  • Direct deposit

SSI beneficiaries can provide the SSA with their direct-deposit payment information by calling 1-800-772-1213 or visiting a Social Security office.

  • Direct Express

Money can be loaded onto the Direct Express Card, a special debit card for federal payments. Sign up at 1-800-333-1795 or 1-800-772-1213, or at a Social Security office.
